Madame Samm at Sew We Quilt asked us
"What is your Superpower?"
Soooo....what is YOUR Superpower?
I had to think long and hard about what my superpower was because I don't really think of myself as being "super" at anything. Luckily, my family and Monkey Boys helped me out and came up with this idea:
I am Rescue Woman!
Thank you #1 Monkey Boy!
#1 Monkey Boy wanted me to let him know when this posted...here it is sweet boy!
I've been known to rescue animals on a few occasions and most of them end up staying for years.
I'm not sure, but I think a neon sign mysteriously appears on my house that says,
"Lost or Stray Pets Welcome Here!"
Roxy arrived at my door and when I called the owner to say I'd found her, she asked me if I wanted to keep her. I did, of course. She ate a lazy boy chair, broke out of a kennel, chewed up shoes and everything else, opened a bottle of Drano (and survived) and just about drove us over the edge with her craziness. But, she stayed with us for a long, long time and turned out to be the best ever dog!
I don't always keep the dogs I rescue. One time I ran through the streets of a nearby small town while chasing a runaway dog. My sister followed me in the car yelling at me to be careful and was prepared to pick me up if I fell down (she's been my partner in rescues several times.) I caught the dog after quite a few blocks and returned it to its owner with no long-lasting injuries to myself!
I just learned a few weeks ago that my youngest daughter believed for years that we'd had a cat named "E.T." According to her big brother we had it turned into a concrete cat when it died. This information was new to me, but apparently my son had her believing this story. Gotta love that older brother! This is the concrete cat, "E. T.", that we've had for about 30 years (and it was NEVER a real cat!) LOL!
Anyway...with Rescue Woman in mind I used
Amy Bradley's Dogs & Cats pattern to create my Superpower project.
It was quite an undertaking and LOTS of sewing, but Amy's patterns are awesome!
We had more than just cats and dogs, so I had to get a little creative with my pet quilt. With the help of my kids who gave me the names of their snakes, bunnies, hedgehogs and hamsters, and the help of my #2 Monkey Boy showing me how to draw a bunny leg, I was able to create a pretty fun memory quilt of all our animals (minus the gazillion pet rats we had.) Only a few hamsters made the list because there was only so much room on my quilt.
How to draw a rabbit foot..thank you Monkey Boy #2!
Just a side note: He told me I needed to stay home to finish the quilt and not go with them on a hike.
He's pretty proud of his part in this project and wanted to make sure I finished it!
The front of the quilt has 11 dogs, 7 cats, a bunny, and an iguana all made using Dr. Seuss fabrics including the Lorax fabrics. Each name is hand embroidered on the collar of the animal using DMC thread who is the sponsor of this super, dooper blog hop.
A Lifetime of Animals
The back of the quilt has a hedgehog, snake, my superpower label, and a hamster
Amos, a Golden Retriever, showed up at our house with a tennis shoe in his mouth
and a chewed off rope around his neck. My husband told me not to feed him, but of course I did.
No one ever claimed him so he stayed and was a wonderful addition to our home for years.
Hedgehogs are weird pets, but my son loved them. He also loved snakes.
Hamsters are not the smartest pets, but my kids loved them and we
had LOTS of them as they do tend to multiply!
Bella was an eviction dog and was obviously abused. She's definitely loved in our house!
Phoebe and her sister, Dog, were scrawny little things when we got them.
Phoebe died a couple weeks ago...sad loss for us.
Thanks to all of you who love and care for the critters in our world!
Look who else is hopping with their Superpowers:

Wonderful quilt; #1 Monkey Boy did a fantastic job with your label; love the ET cat story. My superhero is my son-just finishing grad school-going nights while working full time!
ReplyDeleteDear RescueWoman

The ET story made me laugh too - typical brother thing to do.
My husband is my super hero!
ReplyDeleteLove your quilt, so much fun and memories! My favorite superhero is Wonder Woman!
ReplyDeleteThat is such a cute quilt and sweet story of your pets. Thanks, Carol.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great super power!! The dogs are cute
ReplyDeleteMy hubby does not want anymore dogs because it is so hard when they leave so I am now volunteering at our local shelter. Keep calm and rescue on!
ReplyDeleteI don't think I have a favorite super hero. Love your quilt though!
ReplyDeleteThis is a really cute quilt. I love all your animals. A great superpower indeed.
ReplyDeleteI love an animal lover!! This quilt is just precious! All of the sweet names, the memories.... just delightful! I also had a snake...Rudy...he and Woodstock could have hung out together. :) The Monkey Boys did a wonderful job with their drawings and inspiration.... give them a big hug. And so sorry about Phoebe... it's always hard to lose our beloved pets but I know Phoebe had a wonderful life... thanks to your super powers! Great job!
ReplyDeleteThat's a wonderful superpower; animal lovers everywhere, including myself, appreciate all that you do! Your quilt is so meaningful AND fun.
ReplyDeleteYour house sounds like ours! We have woke on several mornings to strays laying in one of our deck chairs. Of course we keep them too until they wander on off on their own or we see an ad that their owner is searching for them. If they are lucky enough to have a collar on we call and they come right away to get them.
ReplyDeleteYou will have to remind me to tell you the story of the bulldog when we talk on the phone next. It is a precious story.... too long to type out. :)
LOVE your quilt and the story of your pets.
I always knew you had superpowers and your monkey boy was soooo correct...RESCUE Woman extraordinaire....I adore your quilt....it is simply a treasure of a faithful FUR FAN CLUB...

ReplyDeleteSusie
A woman after my own heart, I love rescuing animals as well. Love your quilt. Must admit I've never really been into super heroes.
ReplyDeletelyn.robyn.smith@gmail.com
My favorite superhero was Superman, the black and white serial version. What a man! He could have had riches and possessions and homes on 6 continents but he chose to be a newspaper reporter and live small in his personal life so he could share his superpowers with people who needed help.
ReplyDeleteAny one who rescues animals is my superhero. You are very kind.
ReplyDeleteWOW...luv your quilt and sEw full of memories. The label is precious...luv it!! What a wonderful superpower...you are amazing!! Great job Carol!! Happy stitching, Pauline
ReplyDeleteCarol, your quilt is so cute:)and kudos to you on YOUR superpower! My fictional Superhero is Wolverine lol and my real life Superhero is my hubby, who bravely goes about life, fighting to stay cancer free and making me the happiest woman on earth!

ReplyDeleteThanks for the chance!!
Paulette
Thank you Rescue Woman. I'm sure the pets thank you also!
ReplyDeleteLove your quilt! My super hero? My hubby, Bruce Wayne! Yep, I married Batman!
ReplyDeleteI love, love, love this quilt. What a sweet tribute to all of those much loved pets. I think my superpower might be finding the lost things in the house.
ReplyDeleteLove your quilt, What a great Superpower! Love Monkeyboy's picture.
ReplyDeleteI love to give quilts to friends who are in the hospital or rehab for broken bones etc. Long ago a friend suggested that we keep several lap quilts on hand to give. I recently had a knee replacement and took my own quilt to rehab. I gave it away to the lady who helped me with my PT. I can always make another.
ReplyDeleteAwesome superpower! I love the quilt you made and the rescue work you do! Thanks for sharing it with us.
ReplyDeleteHi Carol
ReplyDeleteYou have a super power with animals. We have three rescue kitties, one of which is sitting on my lap now as I type on my laptop. They have replaced two that adopted us as our first orange tabby was hit by a garbage truck and our little white one succumbed to skin cancer. We now keep them all inside. Being empty nesters, they brighten our days. What a wonderful way to pay tribute to your non-humans who have impacted your life.
Well, you are my superhero now. That quilt is fantastic and so sweet. Wow. Love it. It's darling.
ReplyDeleteAw, thanks, Monkey Boy, for helping grandma realize her super power! Glad you had his help, Carol and I LOVE the quilt. Too cute!
ReplyDeleteOh my, this is beyond adorable! YOU are the super woman in my book. Anybody that helps furbabies like you do should win a prize. All of my pets are rescues, too. I LOVE LOVE your quilt! Thank you for sharing. :)
ReplyDeleteWell, I see myself somehow in your mirror, my mother and I were known in our african town to take every wounded animal and to make him fit again... we had cats, dogs, owl, eagle (yes, we managed too to make him fit again!!!), turtle, rabbit and lots of different birds.....
ReplyDeleteSo, you are from the same world than me!
Love the drawing, love your quilt!
LOVE your quilt and Super Power identity. What talent! Since animal rescuers are heroes in my eyes, I guess that makes YOU my hero.
ReplyDeleteThat is adorable! My son and fiance do dog rescue. The can't have a cat due to their own dog. My hero is my husband. We are very close.
ReplyDeleteI love your quilt and your super power! Anyone who rescues animals is a superhero to me!
ReplyDeleteVery difficult to get to the comment form today for some reason. I have to choose rescue woman as my superhero of the day. I think every pet we ever had (both growing up and now, me as an adult for the last 40 years). My dad was "bad" about bringing home baby animals he found that had lost their mothers (once we tried to raise brand new baby skunks). Sometime my folks were so adamant that we were not keeping an animal that strayed our way that they never received proper names. We called one dog "Girl" for years, because we were so used to saying "here, girl." Great quilt, great kids, great mom.
ReplyDeleteSo sweet. Love the colors with the pets names. I guess my favorite superhero is superman. I loved the Christopher reeves movies.
ReplyDeleteHi, my Super Hero is my husband working to keep us all fed and clothed! Thank You for a great giveaway!
ReplyDeletemsstitcher1214@gmail.com
It turned out cute! You forgot about Heidi saying that if she believed in reincarnation, she would want to come back as one of your animals! :)

ReplyDeleteOh Goodness Carol you had me in tears reading all of your rescue snippets. Your SuperPower quilt is simply...AMAZING! I am following this hop to find what my SuperPower just might be. Thank you sew very much for Hopping and Powering...
ReplyDeleteYour super power is wonderful and should be admired and serve as an example to people in general. Me, I'm a super sister (according to her).
ReplyDeleteAwesome quilt. What a wonderful superpower you have. You might have to make one for each of your kids, even grown up, we still love our pets both past and present.
ReplyDeleteI love that quilt! It brings back some great memories! XOXO

I love your project! We, too, have had a fair share of animals wander in and steal our hearts. Currently, there's an underfed looking stray coming for dinner every night. He won't let us near him but his friendly with the two of our cats who go outside. Thanks for sharing your pets with us and I'm sorry you lost one recently. That's always so hard. Beth @ Words & Stitches, pbstrand@msn.com
ReplyDeleteWonder Woman is my favorite! Girl power!
ReplyDeleteYour quilt is adorable Carol…your Monkey Boys were so right about your Superpower…thanks for sharing!!
ReplyDeleteTell Monkey Boy #1 that he picked the perfect super power for you and the drawing is too cute. I think my favorite is a tie between Storm and Wonder Woman. Control the weather or have bracelets that can stop a bullet, have an invisible plane to ride in and a kicking costume. Which one?
ReplyDeleteYou really are a super hero. I love that you take care of strays. Love your Monkey Boy drawings. You really poured your love into this one along with the love of your family.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Super Hero is my son Joe..He is always there for me and helps me out of sticky situations. He is always amazed at the quilts I make and the amount of sewing I do. I really don't think of me as having a superpower but I think if I did it would be Super Sewist!! I sew 2-4 hours every day...It is my sanity saver.
ReplyDeleteVery smart monkey boys coming up with your superpower. Your quilt is fabulous ... so cute, whimsical, and colorful. I about died laughing when I read about E.T.
ReplyDeleteHmm, my favorite superhero would be Xena, I guess. Love your quilt. Thanks for the giveaway. vickise at gmail dot com
ReplyDeleteI think my favorite super hero had to be Underdog! Remember him from the cartoon? LOL!
ReplyDeleteRescue Woman sounds pretty cool! Your quilt is lovely, and a wonderful reminder of all things furry (or not!).

I adore your quilt - I have seen the pattern and it is perfect for you superpower. The monkeyboys are terrific and very caring to be sure your project is finished in a timely manner. We've only had cats, dogs, and a couple of turtles. My son knew not to bring anything that resembles a snake into my house. Oh, my! Thanks for participating and bringing joy to us and creating a wonderful memory for the boys.
ReplyDeleteYour monekyboys were quite a help and inspiration for your project. They must be super children. My superheros are the women who quilt for charities. It's such a time consuming act of love and giving that is simply admirable. svonfumetti at yahoo dot com

She has been volunteering since she has been 12/13 (for 5 years) at our town's animal rescue EVERY Friday evening :) She has rarely missed a night PLUS it's one of her weekend nights. ReplyDeleteI would say Rescue Woman definitely fits in your case. Way cute quilt showing all the various animals that have been lucky enough to be at your home over the years.
ReplyDeleteI am going through something like this myself. Skyler is a shelter cat but I have been feeding a neighborhood cat for a couple weeks now. She just had kittens on Saturday but no one knows where. Also I just inherited one of the neighbor's dachshunds because he was being too aggressive. He could NOT go to the pound as that was not a good idea at all if he couldn't get along with the 4 other dogs in his own yard!
What a great superpower and wonderful quilt of memories.
ReplyDeletewhat a fab quilt! I plan on making a quilt that's an ode to my four bunnies!
ReplyDeleteI think every Mom is a super hero - no fantasy here.
ReplyDeleteI had a certain fondness for Batman. He was just a regular (albeit very rich) guy with gadgets. I liked the old episodes where they had the sound effect words. :) Thanks for the chance to win. Neat quilt. That's a lot of pets you've had!
ReplyDeleteRescue woman is a wonderful superpower. It's so cute and sweet that your Monkey Boy helped out. Lots of wonderful memories.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite superheros are Batman, Ironman, and Thor.
You really are a Super Woman Carol! Love how you have a story about each and every block!
ReplyDeleteLove the quilt. Your house sounds like mine did when my boys were growing up. We had dogs, cats, bunnies, goats, hampsters, rats, a 3 ft Ball python, two 7foot Burmese pythons and a 4 1/2 ft iguana. Thankfully not all at the same time. Wouldn't trade the experience for the world. Thanks for sharing and for the giveaway.
