An Appliqued Rainbow Unicorn Pillow

I'm sharing my Rainbow Unicorn pillow on ThermOWeb today!
ThermOWeb has lots of amazing ideas for quilting, crafting, and card making...check it out.

Rainbow Unicorn Pillow, finished size 18” x 18”

The mysterious and beautiful unicorn has been a part of history since well before the 1600’s, but
it’s popularity never seems to lessen. Many a child and adult has wished for their own unicorn.
I’m sure Santa has seen “unicorn” on quite a few wish lists! As a symbol of purity and grace,
plus the added belief that the horn contains the power to heal, who wouldn’t wish for a unicorn!

Bruster apparently is wishing this was his pillow (unicorn or not)!

These are the supplies I used to make the pillow:

18” pillow form
12-15 fat quarters

I love using Heat n Bond Lite, Iron-on Adhesive to apply my applique designs to fabric.
There's no tracing images with these sheets. Just print the applique designs on the sheets
using an inkjet printer, iron them to the wrong sides of your fabrics, then sew. So easy!

I like to iron light weight Heat n Bond Fusible Interfacing to the wrong side of fabric on an
applique block to help stabilize the fabric and make stitching easier, especially on small
pieces. Also, to make things go quicker when I'm stitching around the edges of each piece, I
use white thread in the bobbin for all the thread colors and lessen the tension so the bottom
thread doesn't pull up to the top of the fabric. That way I only have to change the main thread
color, not the bobbin every time I move on to a new section/color. The only time I don't use
white thread in the bobbin is when I'm stitching with black thread. I switch it out to black
because it gives a much thicker and cleaner look to it without any white obviously popping up.

When stitching around the edges of the applique, I love using Aurifil thread. I usually use
50wt thread, but sometimes I use the 28 wt thread for a more defined stitch because it is heavier.
Did you know that the spools on Aurifil are different colors to easily differentiate what the weight
of the thread is? It makes it so easy to grab the color and weight I need when stitching my projects.
Black 28 wt was used to machine stitch the lines on the unicorn’s face.

Making the corners of a pillow look pointed is easy when I use a method similar to the way
Nancy Zieman shares in her video. Sew around all the edges of the pillow. On one side of
the pillow, fold over on seam line in the corners. Stitch the seam over the fold on both sides.
Repeat on the other side of the pillow. Turn inside out and use a tool to push the corners out.
Press around all the seams. You'll be amazed at how nearly perfect they look!
