It is always fun to see what ideas my blog hop friend, Carla, comes up with to challenge us. This time she chose to get us creating with "In the Kitchen Stitchin'".
Create something inspired by the kitchen.
It can be pot holders, tea towels, coasters, placemats, table runners, mug rugs, or even a toaster cover.
It's your interpretation of a kitchen project.
Maybe a quilt with kitchen gadgets or a color in your kitchen that inspires you.
Anything kitchen. You decide.
My kitchen could use new potholders and towels, but I took on a different challenge...sewing an embroidered hot pad and a Kitchen Witch.
My friend, Nancy, let me use her fancy embroidery machine and designs to make this awesome bug for my hot pad. The design is from OESD, Scissortail Stitches Boho Soul Collection.
The collection has some other incredible designs in it that I'd love to make a whole quilt with.
It has been a long, long time since I've sewn a doll, so this was definitely a huge challenge for me.
I already had a vintage pattern full of kitchen ideas, including a kitchen witch. Of course, I had to change things around a bit (no embroidered face or glasses) and I will never win a contest for doll making, but overall it was a good challenge for me.
She looks pretty sweet in my kitchen.
My ancestors were Norwegian, so I was raised around a lot of their culture and history. A Kitchen Witch was a part of that along with homemade lefse. According to Wikipedia: "There is some debate over where the kitchen witch originated, some claiming Scandinavia and others Germany, but consensus points to older Northern European customs, as it seems to have been more widespread earlier. For centuries, Norwegians have hung this good witch in their kitchen."
Striped socks are a must for a kitchen witch.
Now that I've sewn a doll after years of staying clear of them, I might take on making another one someday. Maybe...

Oh she's a sweetie. I've never heard of a kitchen witch, but may need one too. Thanks for the inspo :)
ReplyDeleteYour hot pad is lovely and your kitchen witch is adorable! Can you have two witches in the kitchen at the same time though...I'm usually in mine lol.
ReplyDeleteNow, that kitchen witch is just too cute! She fits right in with your Halloween decor too, besides the kitchen. :) Somehow I looked at that bug on the hotpad and was trying to make a sugar skull out of it. hee, hee! Have you used the Crafter's Edge sugar skull die? I can't remember if I've seen it on your blog. Anyway, great work, Carol!
ReplyDeleteYour witch is so cute Carol, you did an awesome job. Your bug is very nice too, such a cool pattern.
ReplyDeleteI almost want to make my own kitchen witch, I think. She is so adorable! Love the hot pad too.
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of a kitchen witch! I love the little poem that goes along with her. I just might need a kitchen witch...Does she magically make dishes disappear?? :)
ReplyDeleteI've been thinking of kitchen witches lately. My aunt used to have one in her kitchen. I wonder if she still has it after all these years. Thanks for the wonderful project shares and for a great reminder to call my aunt.
ReplyDeleteWhile I wouldn’t want any bugs anywhere near my kitchen, this one could be an exception. He’s quite showy in his embroidered design.
ReplyDeleteI haven’t seen a kitchen witch in ages. How cute yours is in her Halloween theme outfit, Maybe my cooking results would all be perfect if I had a lucky kitchen witch.
Oh, my gosh, I remember everyone having a kitchen witch - I think I have that same vintage pattern. So perfect for the hop and that embroidery is amazing! Thank you for a great start to the hop, my friend!
ReplyDeleteThat kitchen witch is great and I don't know about not winning a prize making dolls, it looks pretty darn good to me! It is a perfect addition to your kitchen and love of all things Halloween.
ReplyDeleteThat bug potholder is cool too with so much stitching. Are you really going to "use" it? If I made something like that as a gift, I know it wouldn't be used, just displayed, as those are the comments I got whenever I made something to be used. "Oh no it's too nice to be used".
That Boho Soul collection is really cute! Love your hot pad!! And, oh my, that kitchen witch is adorable! I don't think I've ever heard of that tradition, but I like it! Of course the halloween colors are perfect for you! Now you should make one for all seasons!! Great projects!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely wonderful!! I love the spiderweb skirt on your kitchen witch!

Both of your projects are just adorable!
ReplyDeleteOhhhh, don't you love "vintage" patterns? They are fun to stumble across years later. Your kitchen witch is too cute. I had to laugh at Elizabeth Coughlin's comment, and I have the same question as well.
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute little bug hot pad too. What a fun embroidery.
Your kitchen witch is just too cute! And the bug on your hot pad......incredible! I’d have to hang it up! I could never pot a pot on it!
ReplyDeleteThe embroidered hot plate is wonderful. Great design. I have never heard of a kitchen witch. Your gal is such a perfect introduction to these sweet ladies. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing today. She is adorable. What a cutie to have in the kitchen.
ReplyDeleteVery cute. My doll making skills are dormant, if they exist at all. You have done an admirable job. May your good little kitchen witch keep your pots from boiling over and your spirits bright. Thanks for starting off the hop with this fun post ... :) Pat
ReplyDeleteSuper cute Kitchen Witch, Carol!!
ReplyDeleteWow, everybody should have a kitchen witch. She's so sweet. And I love that bug too.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter and I love making vintage dolls. When I saw this, we did a search and found it!! It's on the way to me now!! She's adorable and I just have to thank you for sharing it!! Kitchen witches have been around for a VERY long time. I'd forgotten about them!! Also, I love your pot holder. You are such an incredible person and share so much with us .. I love your ideas. ReplyDeleteI remember kitchen witches...a fun idea to bring back. Love the bug hot pad too! I have been doing a little machine embroider and love it. Did you quilt first? or after?
ReplyDeleteCute kitchen witch and fabulous hot pad with the bug.
ReplyDeleteI love the design on your hot pad, Machine embroidery is something I want to get into in the future. Your kitchen witch is very cute well done
ReplyDeleteI think the kitchen witch turned out really cute. My husband’s roots are Swedish so we also have a kitchen witch. I love the beetle hot pad too. The detail is exquisite.
ReplyDeleteWell, I suppose your kind of 'bug' in the kitchen would be ok with me though I usually don't want them in my kitchen at all. A kitchen witch is a new one for me and she looks good from my eyes, Carol. I tried lefse once as a kid when I was visiting a school friend - maybe your witch will do a batch for you.
ReplyDeleteYour little witch is so cute - love her broomstick!
ReplyDeleteMy sister-in-law is a huge Halloween fan. She may need a kitchen witch for Christmas-thanks for the idea
ReplyDeleteAdorable! I always love seeing what you come up with!
ReplyDeleteLove your Kitchen Witch and I have that pattern. I may just have to try one.
ReplyDeleteCarol, you've done it again! That little kitchen witch is the cutest thing! She's so you! Fun pattern, cute fabrics, and look at her riding her spoon, made me giggle. And hooray for friends with cool tools! ♥♥ Your bug potholder is fabulous! I can see a whole quilt with those fun designs.
ReplyDeleteVery nice! I wouldn't mind making a doll - I will have to track down a pattern.
ReplyDeleteSuch a cute doll! Great project to make for this blog hop! xx
ReplyDeleteLove your kitchen witch! I think I have that same pattern!
ReplyDeleteYour kitchen witch is fabulous. Love your buggy hot pads too. I agree it would be a fun quilt.
ReplyDeleteThe kitchen witch is adorable. I hope you DO make a quilt of the designs like that bug. It's wonderful!
ReplyDeleteLove the hot pad and your kitchen witch brought back so many memories for me. We had one in our kitchen when I was growing up and so did my paternal grandmother 😉
ReplyDeleteBoth so cute. I had never heard of a kitchen witch.
