Craftsy's Changes Were Worse Than I Expected

I had tried to stay positive on the changes Craftsy was making, but everyday I saw designer
after designer posting about being deleted or worrying about what patterns would disappear
from their store. Well...Craftsy's changes were worse than I expected. Way worse!

My head is spinning!

Patterns that I thought would stay there are gone. Only three patterns are left in my Craftsy store.
Because of this, I'll be deleting my store from their site. It is no loss for them, but it is a huge loss
for me. With barely a week's notice, they totally threw chaos into the lives of those who used their
amazing and wonderful site. It was free, but I would have willingly paid a fee to continue to use
them. I have an Etsy store, but I have a ways to go to move patterns over there. At this time, free
patterns like the ones from our Sew Incredibly Crazy BOM will be moved to Google Docs.
Hopefully, I can figure out something more permanent when things stop spinning in my head.
There are links on my blog that are no longer valid and will have to be updated or deleted...ugh!
That will take a ton of work...I'd rather be sewing!

I'm really sorry for the inconvenience this has caused the amazing people who
have downloaded patterns from my Craftsy store. Thanks for thinking they were good
enough to add to your "cart." It will be a busy time over the next few weeks for those
of us affected by this crazy mess. I hope you'll hang in there with me and the others!
I'm just a little tadpole in the big pond of amazing designers so I really appreciate your support!

I hadn't even checked my store before reading your post. Guess what - I have two patterns left, both of them free, and one of them definitely not a best-selling one. I am going to wait a few more days and see what is going to happen. If it still looks like this when they are done, I will delete my store too. This is ridiculous.

I know a lot of you ladies feel that this platform gave you the opportunity to get started, but I see a company taking advantage of your generousity and turning it into a business that you have no control or right to. I never started on this media as I felt the unease in it all. I would advice anyone to just close out - you have copyright even if it is free patterns.

I'd prefer to take a hopeful stance, as I don't have all the facts about what Craftsy is trying to do. While not well thought out or implemented, I suspect it was driven by someone in their IT department who is ultimately responsible for the migration of all these electronic patterns (which Craftsy hosts for designers for free). Yes, they are migrating/merging internet systems that host these patterns. And, their approach, while painful, was probably to delete non-active accounts or randomly delete patterns, to simply reduce the number they have to migrate. My recommendation is to hold tight, remain hopeful, see what happens in early 2019. What I suspect, after the migration they'll open it back for designers to re-load their patterns manually. Yes, new links to your website would be required, but I think they'll still be offering the free service to host your designs...they simply couldn't tackle such a large migration of electronic files for a service they don't make money on.

Again, I'm remaining hopeful at this time.

I am also trying to remain positive with Craftsy. I was left with two patterns. I have no idea where to go at this time, like you my head is spinning.

I hadn't checked my store either until reading your post. I only have 1 pattern left:( My most popular one. I suppose I will eventually move mine to my Etsy shop also. Craftsy really did cause a lot of upset with this.

From a Craftsy customer, freebies and purchases, I am not happy with this move at all. The free patterns I do have downloaded at least provide me with the name of the designer and I can search you all out. I think they short changed the customer and pulled the rug out from under the designers. Hopefully they have a plan to make this right.

I hope, in the end, that this all gets sorted out and .... maybe you can make hubby do the clerical work and you can hide in your sewing office.

So frustrating for Craftsy to do this to all of you businesses but also to the "customer". Went to my patterns.....well, let's just say, it's a big mess!!!! I feel for all the designers affected by this. What were they thinking by even doing this around the holidays!!!! Not happy

I just checked this morning on my pattern store. Out of 22, I have 6 left and only one of those will earn me money as the others are free. I wondered how they figured what to remove? Some of the free ones they kept of mine, I would have not kept, but kept other free ones. I had been with Craftsy since nearly the beginning and offered only free ones at first, but others had dozens of patterns and some were down to 1-10, with no apparent reason why some were taken off. Was it the one doing the removing kept what she or he liked? Did they remove similar patterns and kept the best selling ones? Who knows? I tried to look up a friend of mine and couldn't find her patterns at all. Maybe she was also down to one and decided to take it off? Or maybe they decided to remove all of hers? It's sad for those little designers who were trying to get started. I was and still am a little designer as I do not sell much. But it sure was a thrill for me when someone did pay for a pattern every once in a while.

We love you Carol and all you do, so don't worry about Craftsy. Just keep doing what you love.

I'm so sorry this is such a mess for all of you and so glad I had not fully decided to join Craftsy yet. I'll see what they do after the first of the year and go from there. Hang in there - a new year is coming. Wishing you all a happy one!!

Crafty never did notify customers of the changes and the potential loss of purchased patterns. With the exception of the classes I have already purchased, they’ve lost my business.

This issue is so wrong is so many ways. Least of which was the timing or lack there of. Your quilty friends and family will support you (all of you) no matter what path this upheaval takes you down.

So sorry so many of you are having to go through this craziness. I know you will all be better for it in the long run. Hang on and find your way through, and look for any positives to help with the stress. Good Luck and Much Success with the changes you make for yourself.

When I received the email stating my store would be removed I hadn’t heard of any changes. So, I questioned them. Asked if there had been a problem with one of my patterns and was told absolutely not. I deleted all of my patterns for them. Their site was free however, how many users purchased our patterns then immediately purchased supplies from them?
It was a terrible way to do all. But mostly the designers who helped promote and build their business. It was through a quilt blog I discovered craftsy and that was prior to creating my own website. I think I am leaning towards Etsy. We still paid a fee to PayPal when using craftsy. Until I do more research I will not make any final desision. Denise @fortheloveofgeese

Heya Carol,

We're so on the same thoughts here... A little mention that occurred to me as I read your post today. In Wordpress, there are plugins for broken links on a website, I have one of those plugins installed already on my site, it does make it easier to fix and find all those broken links and I am going to have a ton of them showing up on it's next scan of links at my site... Blogger may have something like that also with there extensions, or there might be a web service that will help you with that also.

The Craftsy changes are kinda quick and unexpected. My heart goes out to all of you designers. To many people, you all are more than "just tadpoles". Hoping you can change your links and get your patterns moved soon. You also make another good point: you designers were not offered a chance to pay for being on Craftsy.

Susan said...

Craftsy not only did a dis-service to you and the other designers, but also to those of who purchased patterns. Yeah, supposedly they are all still in my library of patterns, but there are no longer any pictures and I can only look for designer's names. I really don't see how craftsy will be able to continue in business. Then I suppose I will end up losing the classes I paid for.

I was stunned when I heard how few were left, and there seems no rhyme nor reason for what was left and what was deleted! One person said none of the ones left were her top sellers. So what was the point of all this? I really am not normally a suspicious person, but this simply isn't making sense with the facts we know. I think there's something much worse coming, and you are lucky to decide to leave. We'll follow you wherever, so take a breath and check some things out. I know most designers have planned their lives around a certain level of income from Craftsy, and this is SO bad for designers and buyers alike. I'm so sorry you are all going through this! It was unnecessary.

Carol, I feel for you and all of the other designers involved. I "chatted" with Craftsy Friday and let them know how upset I was with them. Sure I still have the patterns I bought and all of the freebies also, but how to know what is what is the big problem. No pictures to let us know which is which. I have probably downloaded most of them but how to know since once cannot see what pattern it is! Craftsy's suggestion was to download them to find out what they were...my suggestion was to put the photos back with the file...no response to that! Know that we are behind you and will patiently(maybe not so patiently ;-)) for you to set up again.

They left me exactly one *free* pattern in my store - and took all the others out - I will be moving to Etsy too ... good luck and don't stress - we all know its not you.... its them ;-)

I can't believe they did this - it is terrible

I had better not lose my classes. They guaranteed that we would have them and I expect to have them! Jadahlgr at yahoo dot com.
