Leafs Me Happy - My Blocks

Cherry from Cherry Blossom's Quilting Studio is hosting the Leafs Me Happy blog hop which is
getting us all motivated and excited to get ready for the Fall season.
Thanks Cherry!

Madame Samm at Sew We Quilt is showing us Leafs Me Happy favorites on
her blog and pinning them on Pinterest so we can see them all in one place.
Thanks Madame Samm for creating the hops we're all loving!

Fall makes me think of warm and cozy flannel, so I paper pieced a few flannel blocks, sewed them together, added a backing and started quilting it....

and I hated it!
I didn't like the thread I used, the stitching, the colors or anything else about it. NOTHING! Maybe my puppies will like it. I believe the rules said I need to name my project...hmmmm...how about...

A Cozy Mess

Moving on....
I'd never made a Dresden Plate of any kind, so I thought I'd give it a try (thanks, Jane, for your encouragement.) The Dresden turkey applique was inspired by one I found at Missouri Quilt Co.
I even did some French knots (new to me) for the eyes.

Dressed For Dinner

I was wandering around one of my favorite local quilt shops, Fabric Boutique, looking for some inspiration when I came across a whole slew of these cute Garden Patch Cats by Helene Knott. I made Gourdo Gato and though he still needs some more stitching and a few other Garden Patch Cats to join him, he's pretty darn cute.

While visiting Missouri Quilt Co. I came across a video (HERE) for an easy pattern using a Layer Cake.  It's an easy quilt and didn't involve major math or thinking skills, which worked for me since my creative juices just weren't zinging me with anything.

A few of my blocks
This is ready for the batting, backing, quilting, and binding. I think it will be a perfect quilt to snuggle with my grandsons....

Monkey Boy Snuggle Quilt

I was having a really hard time feeling satisfied with my Leafs Me Happy projects, especially after A Cozy Mess was...well, a mess.

Thankfully an amazing blogger inspired me by
sending me to a pattern found at McCall's Quilting.

It's a slice of pie--how cool is that!
I heard that the amazing blogger who gave me the inspirational shove will also have a slice of pie on her Leafs Me Happy day. No clues from me who it is, but keep an eye out for her version and let me know when you spot it by leaving a comment to get an extra chance at my giveaway.

To make this next block, I ran some fabric through my inkjet printer (using freezer paper) with a graphic and a family recipe. If you don't use special paper (like I did), do not use steam when ironing or it will become a smeared mess (like mine did) and don't even think about washing it. I've since bought some really cool Fabric Paper (Blumenthal Craft at Amazon) for my WICKED project and it stayed in when I ran it under water. Love it!

This is my mother-in-law's Swedish Apple Pie recipe--I have no idea if it is really Swedish or why it is called that--and is a family favorite. It's easy and really good, mainly because it has tons of sugar and butter in it--not a health conscious dessert at all!

I put them both together to get this little wall hanging:

A Is For Swedish Apple Pie

The recipe:

4-5 apples peeled & diced
Press apples in bottom of pan.

Mix together and sprinkle over the apples:
1 Tbs. sugar
1 Tbs. cinnamon

Mix together:
1½ stick margarine, melted
1½ cup sugar
Pinch of salt
1½ cup flour
1 egg
¾ cup chopped pecans (optional)

Spread mixture over the apples. (It will be really thick.)
Bake at 350 degrees for 45-50 minutes.
Serve plain, with ice cream, or whipped cream.

Now it's time for you to head on over to the other Leafy creations.
Thanks for stopping by!

  7. You have been very busy creating all the fall project. Even if I am not american, I am Swedish, I love your turkey. We don´t have the tradition with Thanks Giving and eating turkey, not even in Christmas time, I love, love your turkey. He is sew cool!!!! And of course I must adore your Swedish apple pie wall quilt, even if the recipe in not particular Swedish. Could you tell me how much a stick of margarine is in weight, as I have no idea at all. I will love to try it. And we don´t use pecans in our pies at all. It must be an American touch. But I must try it if I have some help with the measurement of fat.
Thanks for sharing all your amazing projects

  74. Hi Carol- I love all your blocks, but especially Dressed for Dinner, aren't Dresdens fun? And of course, anything with cats I also have an affection for. But you really topped the charts with your Apple Pie mini. This is the perfect time of they year for Apple Pies. While patiently waiting for my tree to give me apples, I couldn't resist and so bought a dozen of granny smith at Costco from Washington state. There were large, shiny green and couldn't wait to get them home and cut them up. I made 3 mini pies and 1 large one. All but one is a "giveaway" to family and friends and my hubby and I share a mini. From California, thanks for sharing.

  121. Well your mess is only that in your eyes. I think it is just fine. But would be cuddly for a dog wouldn't it. I know you really made it with those intentions. I sure your dogs are "leafing" you for making it for them. Monkey boy is cute and does look easy. Thanks for sharing and a give away that I would "leaf" to win!!!

  132. Hiya! Well, the mess was ok, and the turkey was cute, but the cat---OH that CAT!!! Love him Love him Love him. Mr. Gourdo Gato, his big soulful eyes remind me of a cat I had a long time ago. Those eyes could get anything lol. I'll have to try your pie, it sounds scrumptious. Thank you for sharing your wonderful work with us, and thank you for having the giveaway. I'll be watching for that second chance hehe. Blessed be, hugs!!!

  134. What you think is a mess - is not. I like it. The orange makes it pop.
I love the turkey - adorable. Of course, I love the cat. And Monkey Boy is wonderful. I am anxious to try the apple pie. I don't mind to make pie crust. It would be a treat not to have to make pie crust, though.

Thank you for taking time to participate and share - even what you think are your shortcomings. We learn from our own mistakes and hopefully from others misfortunes, too! You are very giving and thank you for hosting a giveaway.

  135. Goodness, Carol, so much to admire here. Fall makes me think of flannel too... you do make me chuckle though when I read how you called the first creation a "cozy mess". I do not think it's a mess, but I understand when a project doesn't leave you feeling that "zing" of pleasure. I have some of those too. ;o)

Love the slice of pie, the recipe mini and the quilt. Oh, my! The dresden turkey and pretty kittie are quite delightful in their fall finery. Well done!
